Wuthnow on church impact on society

Robert Wuthnow quoted in Bowling Alone by Robert D. Putnam

Religion may have a salutary effect on civil society by encouraging its member to worship, to spend time with their families, and to learn the moral lessons embedded in religious traditions. But religion is likely to have a diminished impact on society if that is the only role it plays. (p78)

In other words, it’s not just about individual piety, it’s about transforming a broken world and pointing towards a new creation.
